We are having the exterior re-done this week, and I need to decide on paint color. The exterior is composed of light gray stone with a yellow painted decorative tin which runs from the ground to roof in the bay window area. The stone will be power-washed and repointed, which will remove the brown rust stains from 15 years of non-maintenance. Given the stone is beautiful light gray with hints of brown, I’m thinking the tin should be repainted a gray, but I know from personal experience gray is a tricky color. I’m requesting paint color suggestion in the gray family.
Every dark night is followed by a bright sunny day. So, patience and attention is required and things will be fruitful in near future.

A contrasting color is always nice because it highlights the cornice. Even a gray blue, although monochromatic, would still provide a nice complement. If you find a color identical to the stone, the cornice will be less visible.
You can also scrape away at the existing paint layers and try to see what the original color was (if you are really dedicated, you can hire a professional to do it). Of course sometimes the original color winds up being horrible or tasteless!
It is very likely that the original color was done to imitate stone, and would have matched or complemented the masonry itself. So you are quite likely headed in the right direction.
Thanks, SnarkSlope!
I’m so sad it rainted today, bc I couldn’t wait to return home to throw the swatches up against the stone. Hopefully tomorrow I can start playing with paint. Btw, my favorite swatch has a hint of blue — go figure! Thank you so much for your suggestion and feedback! 🙂
Hi SuzettaV,
I think you’re going in an excellent color direction. A medium gray with just a hint of blue could be a nice contrast with your neighbors brown. Your home is going to look smashing once you’re done.
myrnett you’re not helping. OP is not stupid.
a) Never paint stone work. Clean and point.
b) Try different tones and paint on the bottom level. Take a week and visit the work and you decide what color is best. Patience … Think twice paint once.
Thanks, SuzettaV. I’m an artist and do grpahic art and desing for a living (such as it is). I completely agree- until you get a swatch up there you won’t know how you like it but I’m sure whatever you pick will set off the facade beautifully.
Bxgrl,
Funny you should mention Ralph Lauren. After going through 20+ Benjamin Moore gray samples for an interior project, I ended up with Ralph Lauren. I’m thinking med-dark range of gray for the tin. I have the entire Benjamin Moore paint chip catalog and therefore have only BM to pick from currently, and with that, I’m looking at the below BM colors.
2121-10 — gray
2121-20 — steel wool
2124-20 — trout gray
HC-166 — kendall charcoal
E-86 –charcoal slate
Of course I need to throw these up against the stone for a real-life check, but I’m only in the beginning stages of selection.
Thank you so much for your feedback! It appears you are an expert on color, and it’s nice to know I’m at least going in the right direction. 🙂
