Does anyone know whether Brooklyn’s elementary schools allow the public to use their playgrounds after school hours (evenings/weekends)? For example, P.S. 172 on 29th St. between 4th and 5th Ave.

  1. I believe it depends on who paid for the playground.

If the city pays for it, though School Construction Authority, it is supposed to be open to the public dawn till dusk.

If the money comes from a grant or other private funding there is no obligation to keep it open beyond school hours.

Don’t quote me on this, we are trying to figure out the legalities ourselves (I’m a NYC teacher at a school in Brooklyn that just got an independent grant for new playground and we’re being told slightly different things by slightly different offices as to “hours or operation”).

If I come up with a definitive first hand answer I’ll be sure to post it.
