I’m thinking of moving to the area, and found a great apartment on the block between Smith and Hoyt on Baltic, but am wondering if anyone knows if there’s any spike in crime around the Hoyt St. housing projects, or near the Cobble Hill high school. It looks like there are few “luxury” developments going up on these blocks too. Thoughts? Thanks.

  1. Hey bowlofdicks….you do live up to your screen name. Why would you rent across from a school and expect utter silence? I mean really, how much of an idiot are you.

If those kids were white, I’m sure you would be fine with the little darlings expressing themselves. Right, bowlofracism?

  2. Thanks to all who posted. Huge help! Yeah, won’t be stumbling home at 3 AM…haven’t done that in ages actually! Oh, youth.

And, noise from a school isn’t too big a deal I guess. Par for the course when you live in Brooklyn or any urban setting.

I hope they actually finish all those luxury buildings too. Thankfully, I’ll be renting, not owning.

  3. Since you’re closer to Smith than Hoyt, I think you’ll be fine. As you say, just plan to use that route–which is probably what will make sense for you anyway 99% of the time, since the F train, shops, etc. are all on Smith. Plus, I don’t think walking by the projects is much of an issue during the daytime–I live a few blocks away, and I occasionally walk by and don’t feel uncomfortable (I’m a woman, and I’m not the most thick-skinned). It’s only after dark that I’d really avoid it.

  4. Yes it is safe. The Gowanus Houses are actually very pleasant 99% of the time. However, the block is not luxurious by any stretch of the imagination. And the kids at the school can be loud and at times — like other teenagers — intimindating.

  5. The issue is it is safe today. The police have done a terrific job the last 20 years. But the whole city has been doing great the last 20 years. I remember New York of the 70’s and talk about squalore. I just hope that all these “luxury” buildings are finished soon and not boarded up and turn into party bens for ….. like they did during the 70’s. If you are renting enjoy! If things should turn sour then grab your child and suitcase and run for cover.

  6. i used to live directly across from that HS at 255 baltic. No crime or safety issues, but i do remember it being quite loud during the day, because huge packs of school kids would loiter around, before, during, and after school hours. however this was before they converted the school side yard from asphalt bb courts which is where most of the loitering would occur. idk what it’s like now, but if you are about to become a stay at home mom, the daytime buzz from the school might wear you thin. i got extremely frustrated and annoyed by the noise level. also in the summertime, that particular block attracts the ice cream trucks (halfway between school entrance and projects) and when i lived there, the trucks parked on the block while playing their jingle over and over for upto an hour everyday. i don’t know if complaints put a stop to it, but i’m just giving you a heads up on what to expect. to this day i can’t enjoy a mr. softie because of that baltic st block! 🙁

  7. kids and thugs really don’t mess with pregnant women or stroller moms, it gets them no love from the cops, the courts, or the community in general. I mean, you’re half a block from Smith Street… you’re pretty safe. Also assume as a pregnant woman and/or mom, you won’t be staggering home at 3AM, drunk with a cell phone in one ear and an Ipod in the other like some of the Asshats.

I’ve walked by the HS many mornings for years, never seen a problem.

  8. Thanks jdoo.

Wait, do people actually get shot there frequently? It’s hard to weed through the more dramatic comments and posts versus the sane/cool headed ones.

The apartment I found is significantly closer to Smith than Hoyt, so I guess I’ll just walk out my front door and head that way each day?

I love the rest of the area; would be sad if the proximity to the Gowanus houses was the deal breaker.

  9. The data is plainly available for all neighborhoods on the nypd website linked above. You’ll be safe there but you won’t enjoy it. Or maybe you will…

It is on the other side of the projects on what I would definitely call an incrementally worse block, but I dont think the safety is too different between the two.
