Contractor recommendation: Beer

I need to drop a plug for my contractor: Thahal Beer. He’s been working on my 3 family house for a while now, almost finished with everything. He’s done pretty much a bit of everything for me: demolition, structural work, water, gas and heating plumbing, framing, drywall, compound work, some electrical work, I could go on! I would recommend him for any of the above, but I feel he is especially good at plumbing, drywall and compound, and flooring / kitchens. As far as I can tell, he’ll take on any project. He’s a friendly and honest guy, if you contact him, tell him that you were referred by Yury.

sounds strange. The plumber and drywall?
Wow…I totally disagree with you nise17. This sounds nothing like Beer. He did a total gut in my house and did a great job. If I need anything I can still call him and he’ll come by. As far as berating his employees — I don’t believe that. Beer will go without paying himself to make sure his workers are adequately compensated. I’ve known Beer since 2005 and your description of him is way off.
Nise17, if you are who I think you are, you were a very difficult client. In construction, if a client changes his/her mind, or starts adding things, it is going to cost you and the contract would have to be renegotiated.
Grant it, I don’t agree with walking off the job, but I believe you left him no choice. You were asking him to do things that were not in the contract at no additional costs. Trust me, Beer doesn’t walk away from jobs.
Beer is not a wealthy person and by no means is a scammer. I have recommended him and will continue to recommend him.
I’m proud of the job he did and the life he brought to a house that was once dead.
I have an album full of before/after pics of my house and I’m willing to share them.
If Beer is performing Gas and Plumbing work, did he provide his Master Plumber’s License?
I had a very bad experience with Beer who ultimately walked out on my job without bothering to tell me. After weeks of no-shows and unreturned phone calls he finally answered his phone and told me that the remaining balance owed to him wasn’t enough incentive for him to finish the job but that he would come back if I paid him more. Despite being set back a few weeks and eager to get things moving again, I didn’t.
During the job, I had to re-negotiate our contract twice because work we agreed upon was not done. When asked about the overlooked work, he repeatedly claimed that he was not responsible for what is stated in the contract because he didn’t read it before he signed it. It’s not very easy to reason with someone who believes that to be a legitimate argument.
He treated his workers HORRIBLY, frequently referring to them as f**khead. As in, f**khead, get me that f**king hammer NOW. When said hammer was retrieved, the worker was usually berated for not fetching it fast enough.
Most of the work he did complete was acceptable which is why I kept him on for as long as I did. But, letting him go was a huge relief as his replacements were talented, reliable, reasonable and respectful.
I hired him based on favorable feedback from other Brownstoner users so it appears that my experience is unique. Nevertheless, I highly recommend NOT using Thahal Beer.
