Looking for any recs re: how to get windows cleaned in a rented apartment. We live on the top floor of an apartment with an absentee (doesn’t do much re: repairs but the rent stays low) landlord. Would like to keep him out of it but our windows haven’t been cleaned in literally 10 years. They are technically the flip in and clean kind but more than one has a damaged hinge and/or how do you flip in the tops without standing on a ladder in front of a window that’s taller than you? What are the legalities of hiring someone to do it from the roof? Any thoughts are appreciated.

  1. The easiest way, if you don’t have child guards and can take out the screen, is to tilt in the bottom pane, then use a long-handled squeegee to do the outside of the top pane.

If you have guards or can’t get the screen out, You can do it, but you’ll probably need two people and a ladder. Our technique was to tilt the bottom window as close to the sill as possible. Clean it with a squeegee. Then, tilt it in, raise it up, then tilt it out 90 degrees as close to the top pane as possible (but not so close that you can’t drop the top pane a few inches).

You’ll need the second person to hold the bottom pane steady and level as you tilt in the top pane whilst standing on a ladder, clean with squeegee, tilt back in, then carefully tilt bottom one in.

If your windows are out of alignment or old, it’s really imporant to keep them level when you tilt them in.

Sorry for the long post but the most satisfying cleaning job to me is doing the windows once a year…

  2. Most Leases have a clause that prohibits the cleaning of the windows from the outside. Even if there are window cleaners hooks installed. From the roof? I can’t imagine. Most window cleaners are knowledgeable about “tilt ins”. Explain your problem, they usually can find a way.
