I had a guy come to my house and tell me the basement bathroom had no vents so he needed to REDO the entire bathroom, 4200$. I am wondering if there is an alternative. My dad told me that he thinks the original contractors didnt put a trap in the shower therefore the smell comes from the shower. Is there anyway for me to test if there’s a trap in the shower?

  1. Traps and vents serve different functions- traps hold water to block the passage of air and vents allow air into and out of the system behind the traps (otherwise the traps won’t hold water properly).
Not sure what you mean by “external trap”. A toilet has an internal trap as opposed to a sink or bathtub which must be trapped externally.

  2. You may have more than one issue happening here, better to have a look than to keep on guessing. Not sure what kind of external trap you can put on a shower.

  3. My sister told me that she used to put something on the shower drain and it used to help with the smell.

I looked down and didnt see water. But what I noticed today while looking around is when I flush the toilet I see some water splashing in the shower drain. It doesnt go up into the actual shower.

I read online about an “external trap” like device. Where it would actually be out in the open. Any ideas?

  4. good suggestion with the tape to test for odor…you can also take a flashlight and look into the drain. If you see water, chances are there’s a trap. As far as installing vents if there are none, the only way to do it properly is to open the walls and floors to gain access to the waste lines. After the vents are connected to the individual waste lines for the fixtures, they need to tie into the existing venting system or penetrate through a roof. Not an easy task.
