Hi all,

My property is near the NYC subway system. There is a subway grate abutting the sidewalk to the property. I have requested the MTA to replace the grating with a non-slippery surface however I have not been sucessful in recieving a respons from there.

Can anyone reccomend some type of material (sand maybe?) that I can either install/paint onthe grates to give it some traction.

Granted I know I shouldn’t be taking on this project (MTA responsiblity), however the risk of a slip/fall & lawsuit outways my issue with the MTA.

  1. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT try to fix the problem yourself. I know it may be frustrating trying to get a response from the MTA, but you are opening yourself up to liability if you alter it. If you want to sneak out in the middle of the night and throw sand or kitty litter on it, that’s one thing, but by no means should you paint it or anything else.

  2. Actually. Call 311 to get a complaint number. Then call your community board. The district manager and staff are tasked with working with these kinds of thing. Nota bene, the MTA is a state and not a city agency…..so…..it will be a slooooooooooooooooooow resolution process.

  3. If you didn’t already, resend your letters certified. That is legal evidence that you tried.
“No good deed goes unpunished.” If you take it upon yourself to try and fix the problem you could be held liable for anybody who actually slips.

  4. Call 311 and establish a record of your complaint with them, including a date and complaint number. Ask them to transfer you to the proper party who will work to resolve the issue.

  5. You could buy garage floor paint which comes with “grip chips” you throw on the paint while wet. it dries into the paint and provides grip to what would be a smooth surface. its sold in home depot.
