cell phones down.

Do cops too have to abide by this law? If we see cops on their cell phones are they too breaking the law?

Input wanted! Thanks.

  1. And BFAG, it’s not just schmucks. I’m no schmuck, and I am not cognitively equipped to talk and drive. Most if not all of us aren’t.

  2. Hey, Denton, membership has its privileges. And for the record I think you should be able to talk on the phone and drive if you have some sort of certification in evasive driving or accident prevention. But I think vanburenproud has a point that the average schmuck can’t talk and drive. Hell most people simply can’t drive under the most optimal circumstances – fortunately most of those vehicles are easily identifiable because they are neon yellow sedans or black town cars.

  3. This forum is some kind of Bizzarro World, in which lead paint is the most dangerous thing on the planet, and the genuinely dangerous act of driving on the phone is a mere revenue generator for the NYPD!

I don’t give two poops whether the NYPD drives on the phone. I don’t drive on the phone, because cognitively it is too difficult to handle a phone conversation and the occasional, potentially lethal emergencies that crop up in the course of regular driving.

When you’re engaged in one task (a phone call) you are really good at doing other routine tasks.

But you’re not good at even noticing, much less responding to things you don’t expect, like a child running into the road. When you are multitasking you are only seeing what you expect to see. Here’s a video that illustrates this idea:

The number of fancy classes you have under your belt may or may not change your cognition of unforseen events. I don’t know, I haven’t had any of these fancy driving classes. But normal folks should be ticketed for cellphone conversation, handsfree or not. It’s a simple safety issue.

  4. They’re not supposed to go thru red lights or stop signs either without lights/siren, but they do.

BFAG, I’ve taken some high performance driving courses. You mean if I carry the certificates with me I can talk on my cell phone.

  5. there is a guy, who films traffic warden, who leaves her police car on fire hydrant to go into Dunkin Donut. The video is on public website. It clearly shows her badge number and how she spent time in the coffee shop. As far as I know, she was not issued any citation yet.

  6. For starters, those officers have probably spent more time being trained to drive than most people in this city have spent actually driving. Are you going to tell a cop that you think he can handle driving to an emergency through oncoming traffic against lights while operating the lights and sirens and talking on his 2 way radio but can’t manage to take a leisurely ride while chatting on their cell?
The spirit of the law is to give an officer the ability to fine someone traveling at 10mph under the limit in the passing lane who is to busy talking to a friend to realize the backup they are creating.
This current blitz is strictly about generating revenue. There is a reason they canceled the police and fire academy classes but are actively recruiting those scumbag meter maids. King Mike is also trying to increase the number of red light cameras.

  7. i got a ticket for holding my cell phone in my hand a week or so ago. I always thought the phone had to be at your ear, but that seems not to be the case. Another revenue stream I believe.
