  1. Hello my name is Scott Turnbull from Windows We Are. Inc. I am a Kolbe dealer, so I am partial to Kolbe. Saying that, you will get more for your money with Kolbe. Apples to Apples if you were to price out the SAME exact window from Kolbe and Marvin, the Kolbe would price about 15% less. But once you see the paint job that Kolbe does, you will want the windows factory painted. Its that good, it looks like clad!

Kolbe and Kolbe has more option to choose from:
1)Exterior paint 32 colors! (K-Kron finish) warrantied for 10 yrs. 30 year warranty on there aluminum clad!
2)Interior finish, 8 stained chocies and 5 paint colors.
3)Kolbe has a window called the “Sterling”. On this window you do not see any vinyl on the jamb tracks! Were as the Marvin you will see plastic jambs. In order to use the “Sterling” we must install Brick to Brick.
4)Custom orders only take 5 weeks from Kolbe.(8 to 10 weeks) from Marvin.
5)Kolbe has very good customer service.

Kolbe and Marvin are both very good, either one is only as good as the installer putting it in! We install everthing we sell, no sub contractors! If you need that service it’s available to you.
We have Kolbe windows are on display at our store 9110 5th Ave. Bklyn, NY 11209 if you wanted to see the windows. Call me if you have any questions Scott 718-836-8083

  4. I second the suggestion to repair your old wood windows, if that’s what you have. This is possible as a DIY project, though time consuming. I’m planning to repair/restore all of the windows in my house, one at a time.

This web site has how-to guides on doing the work yourself, and the consultant who runs the site I’m sure could direct you to window restorers working in Brooklyn. http://www.historichomeworks.com/hhw/reports/reports.htm

  5. wish i did. I searched for somebody before — found nobody in the area willing to do the work. There are places, midwest typically, where you can send them to get done. It’s really a lost art — everybody just replaces nowadays, unfortunately, since it’s easier than restoring. So I researched everything to do it myself. Got the supplies, now just waiting for the weather to get better to start the work… It will take a while, but I am really going to try to do it!

  6. We installed Kolbe wood windows in our Clinton Hill townhouse. The contractor told us that the main difference between wood Marvins and Kolbes is simply that Kolbe comes primed and painted – whereas Marvin doesn’t. Can’t say what a Marvin window would have looked like, but our windows didn’t need any painting or treating and came ready to install from the factory, look terrific and have held up well for the last few years! I don’t recall if there was a material price difference between the two. Our parlor windows are the floor to ceiling type with the curved “eyebrow” on top, which I recall the contractor saying that Kolbe and Marvin both specialize in and the windows are the type approved by landmarks.
