hi again. I have a dozen of old doors with very old door knobs/locks. I do not have keys. Also as you can see from the pictire, previous owners put fugly deadbolts in some of the doors.
So I want to remove deadbolts and to use original keys.
About deadbolts: what are the good ways to repair the hole from the lock? So far I tried to cut rounds plugs with holesaw but it is hard to find holesaw with close matching diameter. Even then the circle is quite noticeable.

about the keys. I took apart one lock and it looks very simple. Do you think I can buy replacement keys for this?

thanks

  1. thanks chaps. I did use wood plugs. I just have problems finding right holesaw. For example if the hole is 1 3/4″ I will need 1 7/8″ holesaw to make a matching hole. But all I have is 2″.

What I did, I found 2″ and 2 1/8″. So I am going to drill 2″ hole in place of the original 1 3/4″. then I will make plug with 2 1/8″. Should fit well.
Great ideas about the keys. Will try them.

  2. many locksmiths have modern copies of the old keys. a matter of finding one that works. Could try Phil at Greenwich Lock on 7th Ave in the village.

the wood looks like it could be ash. if you want someone to plug those holes, i can do it using wood. the alternative is to use fiberglass and faux paint it.

  3. a real carpenter would tell you to cut a “bung” , i.e. a plug from a piece of wood of the same type and a similar grain, glue it in, sand it and stain it accordingly, and it will be barely noticeable..there are numerous locksmiths that can cut you a new skeleton key..try http://www.charleslocksmith.com/

  4. When you’re left with a large deadbolt hole you can fill the space with a piece of closet pole or a thick dowel rod and cover the end grain with a piece of veneer. Stain or faux paint it. That’s really the best you can do with what you have. About your need for keys, try some google searching. Van Dykes restorers may have what you need. I hear there are only a few different patters for those old keys so it may not be that hard to find the ones you’re looking for.
