I can’t afford to change my kitchen full of sturdy white laminate. I would like to paint bottom row of cabinets black to anchor them, and the top half cream, I will also put in a marble/ wood counter. Any advice on painting over laminate greatly appreciated.

  1. Ditto to everything already said…except…if you want to use a latex primer instead of an oil primer there is a new Insl-X product called STIX which is made just for glossy surfaces. It appears to work quite well in this type of situation…you can get it at Janovic.

In relation to PHer’s comments, an oil based primer can be top coated with latex paint, that’s why it’s called a primer. In general, however, if it is oil base and not a primer it cannot be top coated with latex…it will peel right off.

  2. I painted some laminate cabinets with that product they sell at home depot, Cabinet Magic. They look great, but it was a very long tedious process. The finish is acrylic like and dirt wipes off easily, when it hardens and cures its doesn’t look painted cabinets at all. You would want to tint the product the color of your choice.

  3. When I did this to a hideous bathroom vanity, I roughed up a bit, primed with an oil-based primer (this made a big difference–I did another with a latex primer and it did not adhere as well), and then painted with a bathroom paint (mildew resistant), which may not be as important in the kitchen. A latex top-coat in a semi-gloss finish also works, as long as it is over the oil primer. (A more experienced painter may say this is not possible; I have no idea if you are supposed to put latex over oil, but it worked for me.) It has held up quite well for at least 6 years now. Obviously an oil-based primer will need lots of ventilation and drying time.

  4. Sand it a little, then prime it, then use paint that is for kitchens and baths so it’s easy to clean. I recommend benjamin moore.
