What is wrong with this picture?
This is a picture of the boiler in the house I’m about to buy. (It’s a decorative boiler. It doesn’t actually work.) I just suddenly realized I never saw a hot water tank anywhere in the house. Does that mean this boiler heats the hot water for the house as well as the heating system?…

Thanks.
I agree with errol832000 (and yes I do plug myself on occaision here as well, I am an interior painter.) I also however own and am redoing a brownstone in Bed Stuy. Ask for money off off the asking price. The owner is going to install whatever the cheapest system is he can and that will hurt you in the long run. Also do yourself a favor and whatever the deal is with the hot water get a good hot water heater. If the house has rentals and therefore more than one shower going you may want to consider two.

better a tabula rasa than someones idea of a “nice” renovation
Heh! Actually I kind of like the fact that the cellar is unfinished. Easy to see everything.
Mopar-
Dont worry….my basement is worse…We are totally redoing it, but right now its scary as hell!
i would ask for an amount off the asking.. he is going to give you a bottom of the line gas boiler that you end up basically throwing away…why is in his interest to do anything else?..im a contractor and a rowhouse (have a hard time calling a brick 20′ wide rowhouse in carroll gardens a “brownstone”) owner (worst of both worlds)..the current installation looks like a joke, basically it looks like a sketch of a boiler, not a real installation, kind of staging in the basement..put your money into a good and efficient system, and it will pay for itself in 5- 10 years..btw, i offer a free consultation, you can contact me at errol832000@yahoo.com
Oh boy! We’re asking the seller to install a new boiler and convert to gas as a condition of sale and he’s balking. And I guess now we’re going to have to add a request for a hot water heater to the long list of demands. Even if the seller agreed, I wonder if the boiler would be chosen and installed correctly.
Nybk01, care to elaborate?
This place is scary!
since you are replacing this awful installation with a new hydronic boiler, you might consider having an indirect hot water heater serviced by a prioritized zone off the boiler..done well it is a pretty efficient solution
Steam boilers make up hot water all the time without a tank. That doesn’t mean this one does or doesn’t, I don’t know. But if the boiler doesn’t work you will have no hot water either unless you install a separate tank. Since you’re planning on replacing the boiler, I suppose, sometimes your plumber can ‘cut in’ a temporary hot water tank while the more extensive work is being done.
