Does anyone know how to secure pocket doors? Now we just have dead bolts from the inside that were there when we purchased the brownstone a year ago. I want to be able to enter our parlor floor from the pocket doors. We rent the 2nd and 3rd floor so I need more than just a privacy lock. But I do not want to alter too much the character of these doors that have already seen there share of careless attempts at security

  1. I was at Simon’s Hardware this afternoon, and they have everything. I just needed a privacy lock for a pocket door, but they have a wide selection of other kinds of locks.

Simon’s is on Third Avenue between 29th and 30th.

I had a great experience there today. Worked with a guy named Joe.

  2. This is very similar to what we have in our brownstone:

When we moved in none of them were working but I have replaced some with finds from Ebay and restored others. The one offered above does not have a key but others for auction will. We also had a key made for us by Charles Locksmith on the Upper East Side.

The above is for a double pocket door, singles are similar but have one just one lock and a matching plate on the jamb.

  3. Yes, there is a specific intregal lockset for pocket doors. The lock “opens-up” inside of the passive door’s strike. I have one that is a mortise type and one that is cylyndrical. There is also a multi-point lock with cam-hooks for sliding glass doors, but would be a sloppy retro-fit on a brownstone pocket door.
