My gauge used to be 1/2 to 2/3 full. Last night, I noticed its completely full. Should I be worried? I regularly purge the water through the bottom knob so the water is clear not cloudy. It’s just full ! Let me know if you think this is a problem or maybe it’s just due to the fact that the boiler is getting extra work these days !

  1. You can install a Thermostatic Radiator Valve for her to control the heat better. Fairly inexpensive and can install yourself.

    Google Armstrong TRV steam

  2. If you can see the water level in the glass, then leave it alone.
It’s when you can’t see it that you need to react.

Let your tenant know that turning off steam radiators is risky business and change that air vent to a smaller one to get less heat in that room.

  3. Thanks so much for your quick reply, Master Plumber !
The first explanation seems to make sense as I know that one of my tenant upstairs turns her radiator knob on and off as a way to regulate the heat.

Is it a problem ? Should I try to solve it or will the water level come down automatically ?

  4. It’s usually because someone had a radiator turned off, which took in steam (as a gas) through the old valve. Once the steam cooled and became water, it couldn’t drain back out. Then when someone opened the valve, the water came back to your boiler.

Could also be a passing fill valve.
