I have a steam heating system. On the parlor floor and on the floor above there are two vertical steam pipes that are capped near the ceiling and have a steam valve. I want to replace these with radiators. My question is are these used for saving floor space and less heat to the area, or are they essential for proper return to the system?
Those pipes are not a part of the return conduit so based on what you’re saying, it should be safe to remove or relocate them.

Just the person I wanted. Rebuilding my own one family. Doing all that does not require a liscense. They are not abandoned risers. Parlor pipe is 2 1/2″ just inside 2nd door. Top floor is 2 1/2″ inside former 5×8 room. Resizing all rooms … almost. So, are they not essential for return? Does Gateway service Stuyvesant Heights? Thanks for your input.
It would probably be wise to have someone verify what those pipes really do. They may be abandoned risers, or sized to heat the rooms where they reside. If everything is sized right, your boiler might not have enough capacity to heat new radiators in those rooms.
