Does anyone know a tile manufacture whom makes art tiles which depict individual letters (Specifically looking for the letter A) surrounded by a leafy Art Nouveau or Sullivanesque pattern? I swearing there was a posting of them on the board at some point, but after checking several old bookmarks, I haven’t been able to find the manufacturer. Anyone remember off the top of their head?

-Thanks

  1. If you don’t mind buying from a NYS manufacturer, check for an upstate company called Lesperance Tile in the Albany Saratoga area.

  2. I don’t remember the original post you mention. If you find it, please post again, as I’m particularly interested in tiles and pottery. In the meantime, though this will be time-consuming, you might want to work your way through the links, artists and studios on this site: http://www.tiles.org/

  3. Not sure if you’re thinking of this company, which I posted in response to an exchange on mailboxes. If you scroll to the bottom, you’ll see letter plaques with ornate floral backgrounds made from recycled cast aluminum: http://www.mailboxixchange.com/address-plaques-and-house-numbers.html
At one point the front page of Brownstoner featured this link: http://www.remodelista.com/2008/07/16/10-easy-pieces-house-numbers/
There are many remarkable ceramic tile makers, and many sources for tiles made to order or tiles you can make yourself. The Porteous family in New Zealand, extraordinary tilemakers, have simple art nouveau numbers and letters which can be assembled with decorative borders. Motawi in the United States, equally extraordinary, has an art nouveau line, but no numbers or letters that I am aware of. One site where you can see selected works of these and other great potteries is: http://www.modernbungalow.com/potteryMenu.html
