I need help creating a sustainable wireless network in a Park Slope brownstone residence. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, and I can’t seem to get the problem diagnosed because every time a repairman comes, the network decides to work! Geek Squad said their only thought was that we could need a new router. I’m happy to get one, but they told me there’s really no way to tell if the router’s even the problem. I don’t know what to do!! Has anyone else encountered this problem? I know Park Slope is notoriously bad for wireless, but there must be SOMEONE out there who has managed to solve it!

  1. What’s the problem you are experiencing (can’t see WAP, can’t connect, internet connection dropping out, WAP connection dropping out, etc.)? What make and model of network equipment are you using and what is the layout? We need more info to solve the puzzle. Wireless is incredibly tough in these old buildings for a variety of reasons but it can be done.

  2. I have interference problems from neighbors’ various device signals crossing the party walls. Also, probably have at least one neighbor who is using residential cable for commercial applications. But oddly enough, if your connection is Time Warner, and if you never shut your system down, your answer might lie in restarting your HD every so often (which is something I assume is done pro forma when a repairman comes to visit).
