We own a brownstone in Cobble Hill and have a rental property for investment in Park Slope as well. We have used Envirex Pest Control and have been really happy with their service. I found them to be very professional and well informed. They have helped me with recommendations and suggestions. They were always prompt and reasonably priced. They really got rid of a serious roach problem at our home when we moved in and a mice problem in one of the apartments at our investment property. They are a local firm. I would highly recommend them. The phone # for Envirex is 718-875-9185.
PestAway (pestawayinc.com) got rid of our roach problem, which was really bad in some areas, with no sprays in the living spaces. They did spray some of the drains in the basement, but used what I would describe as a “roach killing sugar gel” in the apartments. It’s supposed to be harmless for pets and kids.
We have been extremely happy with Heaven Exterminating. Leon loves his job, and gets it done well. Reasonable prices and Brooklyn-based, too.

Good luck.
OMG, there’s such a thing as a roachy smell? What is that? I am familiar only with the mousey smell (much like wet dog).
I have a related question for you all: my neighbor who shares a party wall with our house has roaches, I saw them once and was totally worried. I hadn’t seen any in our house (under big renovations) in the year-plus we’ve been here, but in the last two weeks I saw one large water-bug type and one regular roach. What do you recommend we do to deter her bugs from moving one house over? do we schedule regular exterminator visits? I have two dogs and don’t want to harm them, of course, or myself!
Well I don’t have any real advice as far as exterminators, but if you see any centipedes scurrying around, try not to kill them, they are one of the few natural predators of roaches (and roach babies).

Hi,
I just signed up for Terminix’s pest control services, they were offering 10% off on their website. You have to ask them to honor it over the phone and they will. They are set to come over to my brownstone tomorrow for the initial treatment, thereafter they come every 3 months or whenever you need them to come as you’ll be signing a 1 year contract. Pricing is subject to your home’s square footage and if it is a multi-family or single family. I’m paying $400 for the initial and $160 quarterly as I have a 3 family. I decided on Terminix as they seem very professional, especially helpful when I mentioned I have newborns (twins) in the home and they assured me the treatment would be safe or non-hazard for the children.
I currently have 2 tenants and I needed an option that would squash complaints about ants (in the summer), house centipedes, and now they saw one roach. I’m just to busy to deal with local exterminators so I chose this option. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Good Luck,
Adam K.
You need to keep at it with multiple attack plans. It will eventually work. We bought a house with infestations of at least 4 different kinds of roaches and also mice and other things. You can eventually pull back and live normally, but until that point, anything short of total all out war will give them enough breathing room to continue thriving.
With this plan you can get rid of them in a few weeks:
1. Run dehumidifiers in as many areas as possible. Keep the place super dry.
2. Be insane about vacuuming and cleaning everything every day.
3. Figure out where they are congregating, coming from- change those environments totally. If theres a spot on a wall where you always see them, open the wall up and figure out what’s in there. If it’s by the sink, you probably have food issues/leaks…etc…
4. No clutter anywhere ever – they won’t hang out in the open.
5. Lights – keep the place bright, keep cabinet open- same thing- it will discourage them and keep things bright and dry.
6. Do get an exterminator
7. Fill all holes gaps
8. Get the ‘quick kill’ baits for both large and small roaches. You probably have both.
9. If you have put out other poisons- like mouse poison- understand that this actually attracts roaches, and they can eat it without harm.
Soon you will not notice them as often. After that, the ‘roachy smell will begin to disappear. Then you can start living normally again.
Green, non-toxic, and eco-friendly do not apply to roach infestation. At a certain point napalm will seem like a viable option. Show no mercy and best of luck.
