Trash Can Theft
I’m having a hard time keeping people from steeling our garbage cans. I’ve locked them to our gate and no lock – they just snap off the handles to take them. Any suggestions?

These are all great ideas. Thanks! Beer coolers make sense!!
used to happen all the time to us until we started taking a drill and “writing” our house number around the can and on the lid in small holes that we drill through the plastic. That way the guys who steal them can’t use them for beer coolers (what I think they used to do).
Just ask teh What to give them back.
Same happened to us, at two different houses, and with our addressed on the cans. I eventually made a really nice wooden container with a hinged lid, that has the cans locked inside. I hate the look of cans outside anyway. If you’re not pretty good with basic carpentry, you’d need to hire someone to do this for you…

Nurse Ratched, is that you?
Dave that was classic!!
I have neighbors that have drilled two holes through the side of the can and then slipped one of those horseshoes shaped bike locks though the holes on the side and locked them to the railing.
It sounds a little rough but it’s not bad because you can’t see the locks from the front or top. The lock stays attached to the railing when they take out the trash. They just unlock it and slip the can off.
Put your address on them. At least you’ll know if it’s your neighbors stealing them.
…the yard, not the ward. I must have been thinking about my days on the psych ward.
where do you live?
I donm’t like the sight of the trash cans out front so i keep them in the small room off the back door that leads to the ward
