Hello all, Maybe someone can give some advice. I recently brought a digital programable thermostat (honeywell). It has varying temparture settings rangeing from 62-72f. However, the temparture always reads much warmer about 80f. I can’t take it. Im opeaning windows, and I’m afraid of what my bill is going to look like. I am a new lanlord and have haven’t gotten a bill yet for heating as yet. P.S. There were two wires coming out the wall when I installed it (blue/green) I even tried switching them around, still the same outcome. I contacted a heating contractor who said I probably mixed the wires up some way.

  1. Digital thermostats don’t use mercury switches. If the wiring is old it may not include a ground. You can just make one out of a small piece of wire & ground it to the housing. Most new thermostats come w/ a little booklet telling you what the old color code was & how to adapt it to the new.

  2. All thermostats come pre-programmed to work with forced air heating. Look in the instruction booklet how to change yours if you are using steam or hydronics.

Also, almost any heating system’s wires are connected to R and W in the thermostats.

  3. Is a programmable thermostat still likely to be mercury based rather than electronic?

And di, if you’re opening windows to manage the heat, you probably need to either re-read the installation manual or get a professional to help you out.

  4. The booklet that came with the thermostat describes which wire is hot, which is neutral, and which should be ground (assuming your wiring is updated enough to accommodate a ground). Go back and reread the booklet, or stop playing with dangerous toys, and disconnect the thermostat until you find a qualified electrician to do the work for you. Naturally, the question arises–did you program the thermostat, or did you just wire it? Also, is it level on the wall? The thermostat is mercury based and will not work/read accurately if not level. Finally, where in your house do you have the sensor(s) mounted? If you have them mounted in an area that tends to be colder than the rest of your house, then the rest of your house will feel too warm (and vice versa). However, that would not account for your 80° reading. That would be more tied to sensors, whether level, whether programmed.
