paint consultant
Ok, I give up. I want to hire someone with expertise to help me figure out some paint colors. I find the choices overwhelming. Any recommendation. Thanks

The Benjamin Moore site is pretty cool for selecting paint colors. I wouldn’t trust the color accuracy without an actual sample but it really helps to narrow down the choices.
The Benjamin Moore website has a wealth of information about color, including virtual fan decks and virtual room painter software (either online or download, see Personal Color Viewer): http://www.benjaminmoore.com/
Recently, the company was offering low-cost color makeover services using their design professionals, but it appears they have temporarily (or more likely, permanently) suspended that service. B.Moore has a partnership with Pottery Barn, where you can pick up literature and swatches of current colors pre-selected by design professionals. B.Moore paint is excellent, color saturation and coverage-wise. In their new low-VOC Aura line tonality has been modified so that every color in the line will be compatible with every other color in the line (and paint application cutting-in process has been turned on its head).
HD, Lowe’s, Pintchik, others carry color sample booklets of their own brands containing attractive color combinations. B&N has loads of books showing similar examples. These are great resources. Take a look through them, purchase small samples of the colors you respond to and see how they work on your walls, especially as the light changes throughout the day. Janovic/B.Moore stores now carry a wide selection of 2 oz. sample bottles of their most popular colors. Another site you might want to look at is: myperfectcolor.com/
I don’t know about paint consultants (I think that’s within the scope of work of an interior decorator) but otherwise a good place to start is to pick up small sample bottles of paint, slap them on the wall and live with the colors for a few days to see which ones you like.
I don’t think HD or Lowes carry sample bottles but Doody’s does on E.17th St off Ave Y. Benjamin Moore stores should have them too. I picked up seven different colors of yellow/gold today for my entryway.
