We want to remove this carved wooden alter from our home. Any thoughts on where I might go to have someone take this off our hands. Of course, we’d like to sell it….It is NOT original to the home. The wood is not in great shape. I have close-ups if someone is interested.

  1. I can see why the OP says it isn’t original to the house. Look how it covers the crown molding in an awkward, ill-fitting way and to the right there’s a doorway where also you can see it chops off the top of the door awkwardly. I’d bet this came from a house with higher ceilings and a door for which this was custom-fit. Probably an arched door.

It’s nice it was saved by somebody from whatever house it was torn from.

  2. We may be interested. Please send some close-up photos to silverfoxenterprises@nycap.rr.com or call 518-265-1836 Thanks. Fred from Silver Fox. We will be in Brooklyn this Saturday with our Salvage Mobile displaying some of our salvage, handing our flyers and perhaps we can view it then. I’ll post the block we will be on later today or tomorrow the latest. Thanks. Fred

  3. This is a pier mirror and is probably original to the house. I cannot see the details clearly; it might have had some later modifications. Is that marble on the shelves, and what are the small rails against the wood panels? I personally would not remove it. It adds value to the property.

  4. I can see where you’d get the “altar” description, although it does look like it’s in the same period as something original to the house. It’s a lot of fru-fru, but matches the style of the plaster ornament on the ceiling.

You could advertise on Craigslist, or Reclaimed Home, or Ebay. The larger salvage places might be interested, like Olde Good Things, or Demolition Depot. It’s a huge piece . I like the pediments over the door and window, and above the mirror, but have to admit, the side pieces really are over the top, and make it much too “woody”.

Good luck. If no one buys it, and it’s gotta go,you might consider breaking it up. The pediments might sell by themselves, as would the individual carved componants. I know that’s sacrilege, frankly, I’m surprised at me, but better that than the dumpster. Big pediments, and fragments of furniture and built-ins go for decent dollars on Ebay all the time.
