I am currently renovating a very small kitchen and have to choose between more cabinet space and a nicer back splash or a stove hood. How necessary is a stove hood? There was never one there before. The kitchen has a large window as well. Thanks!

  1. If you do a lot of stove top cooking, especially frying there is a huge difference between an exhaust fan or window and a real hood with exterior venting. Most people I know currently and knew growing up had hoods and they did not have pro ranges. They cooked.

In addition to removing cooking odors, a hood traps steam, smoke and grease when then does not get deposited on you walls, ceilings, cabinets and furniture. You house just stays cleaner.

If you don’t cook much then it doesn’t make much difference.

I have a recirculating fan with charoal filter in my rental apartment. When my tenant cooks fish with the fan on, I don’t know it. With the fan off, I smell it. It does nothing for grease or smoke.

  2. Well, Montrose, your cat nearly killed the thread…

Anyway, if you can’t vent to the outside, I’m not sure those over the range fans do much of anything, unless you’re conscientous about cleaning/changing the filters.

As for height above range for cabs, seems like 30″ is a minimum. I’m honestly not sure you’re allowed to have cabs lower than that re the building codes. I would definitly check if i were you.

  3. Seems to me most stove hoods showed up in the 90’s with the new popularity of industrial appliances. Hardly anyone had them before that time. I agree with Denton, unless you fry/sautee/burn alot, you can do without.
