Looking for a door "thingy"
I’m converting pocket-doors to double hallway doors (that swing into the living room). I need the appropriate hardware and would like to have one door fixed with 2 latch/thingys (top and bottom) so that I can use the other door, except when moving larger things through the opening. great – thanks to all! I think I found what I was looking for!

McMaster Carr has nearly everything in the hardware field and, even if you don’t buy from them, their catalog is a wonderful source of information on the different weird and wonderful stuff that’s out there. Their technical drawings are also a great asset for understanding dimensional appropriateness of available hardware for the particular project one is seeking a solution for.
Try the guys at Amighini 201-222-6368. They sell and refurbish architectural salvage doors (and I’m pretty sure they also sell the hardware).
At the very least they’ll probably be able to tell you what it’s called.
Flush bolts. A flush bolt is mortised into the edge of the passive door and is flush as opposed to a surface bolt or cremone bolt which is surface mounted on the face of the stile.
If the doors are tall (taller than you can comfortably reach the top of), you will want an extension flush bolt, which is a flush bolt with a threaded rod. A longer threaded rod (up to 6 foot) can be swapped for the 12″ threaded rod that comes with it.
I know what you mean…recessed….I only found those as “used” or actual antiques. Go on ebay and search under Antiques….Hardware…you will find “dealers” who will have them…maybe not right away but eventually. I may have other links to them on my laptop at home. I’ll check.
Dave – thanks for the link, but can’t find what I’m looking for there either. The “thingy” is closer to a bolt, but sits on the inside of the door (where both doors meet, so it’s flat, with a small indent that you can move up/down to open/close). Probably not doing a great job explaining, but any help would be appreciated…
