Please be advised that there have been a number of cars broken into in the Park Slope area, these petty thieves are looking for GPS, Ipods, Speakerphones, money, etc. Dont leave your GPS clamp on your window. These men are described as either white or hispanic, one has very short hair, almost bald, one carries a Blue Duffel Bag, they have hit several blocks in the slopes. They take their newly stolen items to local car services to sell for petty money, leaving u with damage, money spent & items gone, keep your eyes open & post signs on your block describing auto break ins, maybe they will think twice… P.S. they have even broken into cars in the late afternoon when it is still light out.

  1. I was one of the lucky break-in victims as well. I parked on 11th St between 8th Ave and Prospect Park West. They got my GPS. I had the mount on the window and GPS under the seat. (Please, no comments.) The GPS was nice, but it’s really the bother of having to wait for the police to come, then the finger print guys and the time and expense of fixing the window. On top of everything, I was given a run-around when trying to report the crime.

When I walked away from my car, I saw more broken glass in the street. I also saw another car broken into on Prospect Park West and 13th Street a few months ago.

As someone suggested above, I may just post warning fliers in the neighborhood.

Anyone know of a really cheap place to have my window replaced?

  2. i was one of the lucky individuals to get my car broken into. they only got my cell phone, but, yes, i was left with the headache of cleaning up, paying for the window, & losing all of my cell phone numbers. it is unfortunate, b/c the police do nothing to help and to stop the crimes. i realize it is “petty” crimes, but they are crimes and they are only petty on an individual level, but given the increase of it happening and the cost to windows, phones, and gps systems the costs become quite high.

the thieves used my cell phone and the cops could careless about following up.

i am sure they are busy and all that, but there has to be a rookie or two available to follow up on these.

  3. ummm its only in recent years that businesses in park slope have allowed dogs into their business. & what owner wants the liability of having a 150lb pit bull roaming their store? I know I wouldnt. I undertand your point but there are different views on this.

  4. it makes me sick to see dogs tied outside.
i mean you would’t leave your purse or wallet out there
would you? do these dogs have no value to their
    owners?

  5. P.S. On the other topic mentioned, stealing small purebred dogs is nothing new. My father had a beloved dachshund stolen from his car way back in the mid-60’s, on a busy commercial street in the middle of the daytime. He still grieves for that dog. Ten years ago I had two neighbors in another state whose dogs were stolen out of their yards in the daylight. Around the same a friend of mine almost had her Jack Russell stolen when she tied him outside a restaurant, again in daylight with plenty people around. She went outside just as the thief was about to loosen the leash.

If you have a small to medium sized purebred dog, you have to assume it will be stolen if you leave it unsupervised outside. That’s the truth of it. I saw a little dachshund tied outside a restaurant the other day at night and I was sick with worry for it. You just can’t do that. Besides the dog hates it. No creature is more miserable and anxious than a dog tied up outside a store or restaurant, staring at the doors whining for its owner.

  6. A friend told me she heard from a cop the thieves will look for the mount and if it’s there they’ll break in. And they’ll even look for the spot on the glass where the mount was attached (because it’s visible if you don’t wipe it down) and break into the car if they see that too. So wipe down the inside of the windshield so they can’t see the spot where the mount had been.

I haven’t heard anything about car break-ins in PLG’s LM. Not that I know everything that goes on. But there was a rash of thefts of shrubs and trees stolen from fronts of houses this Spring and Summer.

  7. caseycrespo’s advice is correct. Remove all evidence (even the mount) of a GPS or a laptop or any bag from inside your car. I see the weekly reports from down in Philadelphia and whenever there’s a car break-in it’s reported that GPS was taken or laptop taken. Common sense.

  8. you are right, someone i know tied their dog to a meter on 5th ave near 12th street & it was dognapped, luckily they found the dog near 18th street. & 4th ave. wow i didnt even see it in the thieving way…

P.S. The Car thieves that I was talking about sometimes ride in pairs up & down the blocks on Bike… Sometimes separately & then meet up when they get a “Hit”… They broke into a car on 7th Street Bet. 4th & 5th Ave sometime last week at around 7pm.

Lets catch these sons of…. NYPD seems to care less about auto break ins…
