well, I was just quoting Flexner from his finishing book. floor wax (most likely with silicone) isn’t quite the same as paste wax.
But I personally wouldn’t wax a floor unless i was going for a really traditional look (and it wouldn’t include poly in the first place) and was slightly masochistic.
Bob Flexner is a furniture builder, not a flooring expert. I’m a woodworker too and occasionally paste wax/buff urethaned table tops and cabinets too because it doesn’t matter if the finish gets a little soft. People and dogs aren’t walking on my coffee table.
Google on “wax urethane floor” and check the warnings. You shouldn’t use any harsh chemicals on urethane — ideally just clean ups with water and a little white vinegar. If the finish has worn down to bare wood and you apply wax to it, even a floor sanding might not get rid of it. Wax has a tendency to melt under the friction of a hot sander and sink further into the grain of the wood.
I had to replace my floors here because the previous owner had been using floor wax to shine the badly worn floors here. Verrazano sanded them and you could literally smell that old wax. I poly’d them but the finish began scratching and flaking off within a year.
Bob Flexner says you can wax (i assume you mean paste wax) over any finish, but that not every finish can go over wax. He says poly will cure softer and more slowly. So you may have some issues if you want to put another coat of poly on.
Don’t wax a urethane floor. Liquid floor waxes won’t adhere to urethane and paste waxes contain distillates which will soften and dull it even more. It’s like wiping paint thinner on your floor.
Once the poly starts to accumulate scratches paste wax will improve it’s appearance. I might not be necessary for a few years.
You can not poly over wax. Don’t think there is a problem of wax over poly. But why would you want to ???
Poly is like having a plastic covering over a wood floor.
For heavy traffic (kitchens or kids and shoes) 3 coats of poly. For adults in stocking feet – 2 coats is file. Clean with water – nothing else added. Dry after wetting. They will last for many years.
