  1. I’ve taken the course as well, and highly recommend it. It is useful to anyone, homeowner, renter, house dweller or apartment dweller.

In the beginner’s class you learn how to correctly measure and figure out how much materials you need for any project. You learn how to correctly and safely use lots of power tools, including drills, circular saws, reciprocating saws, all kinds of sanders, compound miter saws, table saws, routers, etc. I learned basic tiling, framing, drywall construction, mudding, as well as basic plumbing, sweating pipes, all kinds of joints and angles on copper pipe, and basic pvc installation. We also learned how to install a toilet, and the basics of electricity. We learned painting, too.

Also the basic terms and lingo of the building trades, which comes in very handy when dealing with contractors and handymen, and even the sales staff in hardware stores.

Take the course, you won’t regret it. It’s a lot of fun, too.

  2. It mentions carpentry and electric work. Does the electric include rewiring light fixtures? Does it cover any plumbing stuff like annual boiler maintenance so I don’t have to have a plumber in to check and clean it every year?

  3. I have taken both Level 1 and the Advanced Class at the NHS East Flatbush and loved both classes! 10 weeks each, $150.00 and the best money I’ve spent. The instructor was so knowledgeable and willing to discuss individual projects and offer suggestions outside of the lessons. The class was small and totally hands-on. The students had varying levels of expertise with home repair and tools (from zero experience to quite a bit). I was somewhere in the middle and learned a lot, got refamiliarized with some tools I’d not used in a while, got to ask a million questions and meet some really cool people! Any homeowner would learn a lot from this class, even if you don’t wish to do repairs yourself but wanted to be more confident and knowledgable when hiring contractors, you will get a lot out of it. I cannot speak more highly of NHS and all they do for the community of homeowners and people who desire to become homeowners. It is a fantastic organization.

  4. That’s very funny Denton. When I was single I was often told that the way to meet men was to take an auto repair or home improvement class. Inevitably, these classes were full of chicks! I ended up making some cool gal pals (and learning how to change the oil in my car).
