most remnants place around here don’t seem to have enough to carpet a 5 story stairway.

  1. You need Atlantic Carpet Warehouse in Brooklyn. Most reasonable prices I’ve seen, excellent service and can do installation.

They have really big remnants and in nice quality 100% wool carpets too, along with synthetics, that can be cut into narrow strips either to carpet from edge to edge on stairs, or to edge it to make runners. No need to buy something specifically marketed as a stair runner.

We got a beautiful wool remnant there to carpet one room we wanted to be quiet and absorb noise and we really like it.

  2. In the 70s, it was ABC Carpet at Union Square but they’ve since gone very high end.

I got some real nice stair runner carpeting courtesy of a row house fire. The carpet originally cost $1500 and was only six months old when there was a basement fire. The insurance company wrote off everything on the second floor because of smoke damage. A little cleaning and it’s good as new. Cost: free.
