Is Bushwick a safe neighborhood to live in. I want to move to Brooklyn but I can’t believe how expensive it’s gotten since i moved out a few years ago. I was hoping for a one bedroom for under 1600, but I’m not having much luck. I found a really nice new construction in Buchwick, I just don’t know about the neighborhood. I will be a female living alone.

Any opinions? Thanks Brooklyn!!

  1. I’m a female and when i checked out the area two years ago, I did feel a little wary, but two years later, you’ll be amazed how quickly things have changed! Yes, more young professionals are making the move out here. i feel safe and the neighbors are all really nice and has a very family oriented feel.

I think it is just the stigma that bushwick has carried for so many years and it’s hard to get rid of. However, in time I think Bushwick will be just as hip as its sister, williamsburg. After all…it sooo close to the city! 🙂

  3. i lived in bushwick for 5 years until 18months ago. fairly close to the east williamsburg side and i’m sure its not the same everwhere. but as a single female i never felt unsafe. came home at all hours walking from teh subway etc.
you have to go to the place yourself at night and walk around. everyone has different standards of what feels safe so its no use relying on other people’s opinions

  4. In my opinion most of the posts here are out of touch with what’s going on in Bushwick right now. I’ve only lived here for a year, but have had a better experience in Bushwick than I had in Williamsburg or in Jackson Heights, and just signed to live here for another year. There are plenty of beautiful new apartments available, new options for going out and eating opening up all the time, and a rapidly growing population of young professionals and hipsters living in the area. In terms of safety, I have had no issues whatsoever, and find most of the neighbors to be friendly and laid back. Granted I am a 200 pound male, so people are less likely to give me a hard time, but my roommates are skinny hipsters who come in at all hours of the night, and our girlfriends live in or else visit the area regularly without any incidents. If you carry yourself properly, know what you’re doing, and have your wits about you, Bushwick will be a safe and exciting place to live.

  5. Ahhh, drunk in Astoria, is just that drunk in Astoria—nothing to feel uncomfortable about. Unlike most neighborhoods you can live here with little survival skills. Skinny, pasty, WP can live here w/o fear.

$1600 or less will get you a small one (or even two bedroom) of varying degrees of condition, from new to old, clean to ahhh, less than clean. 20 minutes sometimes 15 to midtown. VERY vibrant immigrant culture, mostly Greek, and eastern European, as well as every other culture known to man (seriously!), as well as a few interracial couples. Everyone lives in virtual peace.

Presuming your a “hipster” type you may feel some resentment thrown your way from long time residents. You people represent an unwanted change to an already stable and vibrant neighborhood. Check your entitlement at the subway, try hard to assimilate and you may have a ball if you enjoy true diversity.

An objective view from one who doesn’t really like living in Astoria, but appreciates it’s benefits.

  6. I have two female friends who on separate occasions were beaten in Bushwick by packs of teenage girls within the past year. Just reportin’ the facts…

  7. I live off the Dekalb stop, between Knickerbocker and Irving. We have a 2 bedroom with a backyard for $1450. True, it’s a predominantly hispanic neighborhood, but it is gentrifying, especially towards the Jefferson stop.

Look, if you’re a woman, you’re going to get hit it, but if you can handle that there’s nothing wrong with living here. In fact, I enjoy it. The neighborhood has character, it has charisma, and it has everything you need. You won’t ever feel like you’re alone, or you live in some stodgy small town, because there is always something going on.

The truth is that if you’re coming home drunk at 2 am in any neighborhood you’re going to feel uncomfortable. Suck it up and call a car service. It’s a 20 minute train ride to union square, so suck it up and get tough.

  8. I live in Bushwick and the subway ride from Jefferson Street takes 19 minutes to union square. The claim that it takes 40 minutes is absurd.
