We would like to remove the window grates on our unit. There are 5 window grates that need to be removes on what is equivalent to the 2nd floor and 3 that need to be removed from the 3rd floor. Scaffholding will need to be put in place to remove about ½ of the grates. The other ½ can be accessed from a fire escape. I believe the grates will need to be cut from the brick facade. Does anyone have a recommendation of a person who might perform this type of work? What is the typical cost? And, I assume the decorative wrought iron might have a value – if so how/where can I sell it?

  1. Buy yourself a grinder with a cutoff wheel. Can’t you access the ones from inside the apt that you say you need a scaffold?

Take the results to a scrap metal place per above or get friendly with your local collector who will tale them off your hands.

  2. Vinnie’s Italian Iron works would probably love to have them if they are really the old heavy stylish ones with the detail at the tops…because they sell them as well.

That said, he’d still charge you (dearly) to take them down; but he might be worth a call

  3. Any facade waterproofing contractor could do this. They would also be experienced with scaffolding too, which is the only skill here.

I’m not sure if an architectural salvage place would be interested in old window gratings, especially after they’ve been cut off. Scrap yards will pay by the pound though. There’s one on 6th Street next to Dykes Lumber.
