Which first - Floors or Painting
I will be doing a light sanding and poly the floors, also painting the walls. Which is best to do first, floors or painting walls. Thanks

as an ex-painting contractor, i’d strongly suggest you really clean the floors first . . . i said CLEAN . . . then cover, tape off. paint the walls, uncover the floors and then sand and poly. paint first, refinish next. and leave some extra paint for the mouldings along the floor. they’re bound to get zonked a bit here and there in the refinishing.
I had no problem doing walls first, then floors. But I was doing some other stuff too, and I did it that way because I heard that everything that falls over in the course of the renovation winds up taking it out on the floors.
Baseboards *ALWAYS* last — they conceal the flaws with the ends of the floors and walls.
In a perfect world, I agree that floors first would be best. But it depends on your timeline. If you can wait a week or two, I haven’t had a problem with painting first, then doing floors. We don’t have toe molding, and our trim is shellacked, so we just went ahead and did the floors after patching and priming walls. We did have to be super careful about protecting our newly spiffy woodwork, though.
Floors first. Assumming that you’re removing the baseboards to get under that 3/4″ space first. The reinstall baseboards (or install new baseboards) and then paint. If you don’t do it that way, there will always be a 1/16″ inch gap where the old floor stain will show through and it will bug you to know end…
It takes longer to do it this way, but it’s the proper way to do it. Many contractors skimp and paint first. Not the correct way to do it.
I would suggest leaving the floors to the very last thing. although I had the floors done prior to the painting due to scheduling. I just made sure every inch of the floor was covered.
i did my floors first and then the paint. I just made sure to clean everything really well and get all of the dust up.
My process is repair the walls (replastering, fixing cracks, etc). Then sand the floor. Vacuum everything, including the walls. Tape down rosin paper to protect the bare wood. Prime and paint the walls. Then lay down the floor finish.
Even a light floor sanding will kick up a lot of dust, which can statically attach itself to newly painted walls.
