We need to redo the floor in our cellar/rec room/office/guest room. It floods about once a year so I’m thinking polished concrete or large tiles to make clean-up real easy.

Does anyone have any opinions on polished concrete vs. tile?

Can anyone recommend a reliable flooring contractor they’ve used?

Thank you.

  1. We installed cement terrazzo. It was very expensive but looks awesome. White substrate with white marble looks great!

Terratop also does epoxy terrazzo. I’d investigate them.

We did radiant floor heating. We barely use it – the boiler room kicks off a lot of heat.

Don’t forget to install a dehumidifier. We tapped ours into the plumbing to avoid hauling buckets.

A solid surface beats the grout lines any day. Even with cracks – yo can always recement those in. It’s a floor, not a foundation.

  2. I think stained concrete looks cooler but requires a more skilled craftsman to do it properly. Also, concrete can crack over time. So we picked large tiles.

There are tiles that look like concrete if thats the style you are going for. Not quite the same look but you get a similar vibe.

  3. We used ceramic tiles over newly poured concrete when we redid our basement/rec. room this past winter and are very happy with the result. It looks good and we’ve noticed that the basement feels less damp than it used to.

  4. What about those Flor carpet tiles someone was selling below. You can have something nicer than just concrete, but easy to clean or replace after flooding. They’re pretty durable. If something spills (or floods) you can pick them up and hose them off, hang them to dry, and put them back. I’ve been planning on using them when my build out gets that far.
