Brownstoners,

I know winter is not top of mind with this weather we are having but does any have any good recommendation for Gas Boiler Contractors? What does this normally cost?

We need to remove old oil boiler, oil tanks. The house is a three family four story building — any recommendations on boilers models and hot water heaters?

Thanks in advance,

  1. Hi,

I am secretary of my Co-op board, and have just been the coordinator for the installation of two gas boilers to replace our old and dying oil boiler. We went with Gateway Plumbing, and have been very happy with the results. Gateway has been thorough, professional, honest, highly responsive (emails answered within hours), reasonable, and always good at anticipating issues. John from Gateway has worked closely with us to address the many small problems that arise in an installation of this size (our building is four floors with 9 fairly large units). He was cheaper than the competition and has been very reliable with followthrough. I have strongly felt that we were on the same team throughout the process. I recommend Gateway highly to you.

A quick note on the process – we had someone else remove the old oil boiler and the oil tank. Gateway has been responsible for doing the new piping and installing the gas boilers and all the monitoring equipment. They pointed us to a good filing person and a good chimney company to do the exhaust work. Our building is a large one so the pricing will probably not be particularly meaningful for your context. However, I will tell you that we weren’t able to locate those deals anymore where you get free boilers for converting to gas etc. Boilers don’t come cheap. But you will also see savings in terms of efficiency, etc.

    Good luck in your search!

  2. Hello Op here,

Denton did you mean $3-6K? I have never heard anyone talk about this costing so high on the previous posts regarding boilers.

    Thanks

  3. joe from all boiler is the go-to guy. i had 2 plumbers fail to fix my boiler and then joe came to the rescue. don’t know what the cost for a replacement would be but joe was on-time, reasonably-priced and good.

  4. Keyspan National Grid doesn’t offer this anymore.

Cost of a new HE gas boiler with direct water heater is $30-60k.

There are some regular advertisers who could help you

  5. If you have oil now, Keyspan (or whatever the new name is) may still have its program where you get a boiler for free if you convert. They set you up with contractors. We had a poor experience with the ones we used, but complained to Keyspan and they arranged for a 2nd person to come out and fix what had been done at no charge.
