hellooo! im new here on brownstoner.

i’m new to brooklyn too. i transferred to brooklyn college’s film program for the fall from SUNY purchase’s playwriting program.

anyways, i’ll be living with two other kids who are also attending brooklyn. we’re moving to BK in august.

i know the city and brooklyn pretty damn well, i’ve got the street smarts and the transportation system down, but… i’ve never lived in either place.

so here’s where i need your opinion:

we’re looking at living in midwood or bensonhurst…however, i’ve heard bensonhurst is much cuttier than it lets on. is this true?

i’ve also heard great things about midwood and park slope- but park slope seems way out of our budget.

we’re trying to find a place that is biking or walking distance of the school- or at least somewhat close to convenient transportation (i dont think any of us wants an hour long commute!)

i’m just wondering if anyone had ANY advice for 3 new brooklynites- where to live, what to avoid? neighborhoods you’d recommend- anything!

thanks sooo much!! 🙂 i appreciate it.

love,

loveachother

PS let’s get this straight for any of you anti-gentrification jerks: i’m not moving to brooklyn because it’s cool, because it’s what the cool white kids are doing- i’m moving to brooklyn to further my education, to be closer to a massive film/tv market, to do my thing. i’m not trying to live in some gross hipster neighborhood, i’m trying to live somewhere a little more family oriented. i’m a student, not a threat. thanks.

  1. agree with “fake post.” I realize language has changed since I was in college, but still, we didn’t refer to ourselves as “kids” and I doubt they do now – that was the tip off.

  2. how is it passive aggressive?

…i’m just trying to get an education and live somewhere decent; i came here to get real opinions.

sorry if, you know, utilizing the site offended you.

  3. thank you! really appreciate it. our budget is about….600-700 per person…so this was very helpful. hope your memorial day off is great!

  4. My son has an apartment in a six story apartment building on Glenwood Road, a block north of the campus. There are several similar buildings on his block, all of which look pretty well-kept. His rent for a one bedroom is under $1000.

  5. Assuming that this is a real post, I suggest that you look in the Victorian Flatbush communities south of Cortelyou Rd or in Midwood north of Kings Highway. You want west of Flatbush Ave. You should be able to find a decent 2 bedroom within a 20-25 minute walk to the college for around $2000 or less. Welcome to Brooklyn
