We are looking for an architect to design a new half-story on top of our brownstone, and to open/brighten our parlor floor (adding a kitchen to that floor as well). We’d like someone with a modern aesthetic, but who will preserve some of the original details, and make it all look like it belongs. Someone with an interest in ecological systems and materials is a big plus. Any recommendations would be most welcome.
I lived in Clinton Hill Brooklyn from 1993 – 2000 then moved to Prospect Heights until 2003. I currently live in Florida but am very familiar with Brownstone renovations, one of which I did in Park Slope – which was a true brownstone. I also did some work on a house in Canarse. I currently have been living in Florida for the last six years but check out my portfolio at this link

Also try George Architect
I Agree with Jane. Dubravka Antic of Seem+Less Architects has been a great help to us. on several projects(residential and commercial). If you want a “star architects” design without the “starchitect” bill. We are about to do some new things in Brooklyn are are definitely going to use Dubravka nd her partners of Seem+Less.
try maggie peng studio. i know she designed a similar project in brooklyn recently.
Try Dubravka Antic at 917-304-2288. We are in the last phase of our brownstone gut reno. It is definitely a modern interpretation of a brownstone. We have been very happy with her work.
I think these guys are amazing!

I haven’t worked with them (although I know Perla and she’s great) but look through their portfolio – they have an amazing aesthetic and some really creative ideas for brownstones.
I forgot to mention that Big Prototype is very eco-conscious–they used recycled materials in one of my kitchens.
You should try Big Prototype, a small Red Hook architecture firm run by two Yale Architecture grads. Their rates are reasonable and their taste runs modern. They just redesigned and helped manage the renovations of an entire 3 story brownstone for me. I was very pleased with the results.

Check out the architect thread on the forum for loads of recommendations. I often mention the same 3….
