We are planning to gut our kitchen and dining room and are thinking about using the Home Expo design service. My understanding is that for $750, they come out to measure the space, help with the kithchen layout & design the lighting plan. The customer also gets detailed plans from which a contractor can work. I have a contractor in mind so this seems like a good route to follow.
The $750 is “returned” when you buy $5,000 or more of items from Home Expo.
Has anyone use this service? Were you happy with it? Any other feedback is greatly appreciated.
Watch out. Our Home Depot designer did not account for huge mouldings that were in our kitchen. Cabinets did not fit when they arrived!!! Also, got rolled by their trucking company. They refused to bring in the whole kitchen and all my appliances saying it was “curbside only, but for $80 they will bring it into the house.” What was I to do? I had to pay them, or leave everything on my sidewalk… I did get a $300 shipping refund from Home Depot when I complained….
I helped my friend re-do her kitchen and we used this service. I thought it was worth it, particularly if HD Expo has the cabinets you want anyway.
HD does charge less for this, but their cabinet selection is much more basic.
Once she had the measurements, the Expo “designer” was very thorough and re-did the plans until we were satisfied. Like Ikea, the plans are all computer-based, and the designer can call up all the options for each cabinet line.
My only caveat is that our designer lacked design sense–she initially selected cabinet sizes, etc., that didn’t make the most sense to us. If you have no idea what you want, this might be a problem. But if you do know what you want, you can work with him/her to get a plan that works for you. And I don’t think we got the best Expo staff person, although she was very nice and responsive.
hire your own, you will save money and get what you want, and not be locked into buying everything at expo
Home expo shares the same measurers as home depot.
Home depot charges much less for the home visit than expo.
