We have a few loose and very squeaky floorboards in our pre-war apartment. They give a little spring to your step when you walk over them, which I don’t mind especially, but one board in particular shows signs of strain, and I’m afraid that it may break down the line if we don’t take care of the problem. Can anyone recommend a good floor repairman? Any ballpark idea what the repairs might cost us? Thanks!

  1. depending on how bad the dip is, you might be able to just use some shims to get the squeaking to stop. basically shim between the joist and the subfloor.

if it’s really bad, you might consider sistering the offending joists, which isn’t that tough of a DIY project (if you’re into that kind of thing)

  2. Thanks for the suggestions — I think the problem may require more than just talcum powder. The floorboards are pretty bouncy. Any suggestions about a good floor person who could re-seat the flooring to the joists if that’s what’s required? Any ideas about what it might cost?
    Thanks!

  3. hmm…not sure that would work for parquet floors so well, especially if the squeak is coming from the subflooring which would be tongue and groove. The squeak is the wood seperating from the joists and rubbing when weight is applied and then released as you walk over it. The real way to fix it, is to get that flooring seated back on the joists…
