We are looking at a Victorian in Bay Ridge on a great block. However, there are only a few trees on the whole street! How can this be? We are talking between 3rd and Ridge where all the other streets arount there have trees. If I buy the house I want to have a green street. Can I plant a few trees myself? I highly doubt I’m allowed to, but does anyone know what the process and if it even will work? Has anyone planted their own trees?

  1. There are a few places in the city where street trees cannot be planted, which could explain why there are so few on that particular block. I don’t know all the reasons, but one is that the subway tunnel isn’t deep enough.

  2. You can also apply for a permit to plant the trees yourself. Contact the Parks Department and they will send an inspector to determine the type of trees and where to plant. They have specifications that cover everything from how deep to excavate, what type of soil to use, staking the tree, fertilizing and watering, mulching and installing block pavers around the edges of the pit. All said and done it is rather expensive to do the work yourself; and trees can only be planted for two months in the spring and two months in the fall. Otherwise, you can get on the list for the city to do the work for you, but have patience — it takes anywhere from 6 months to 3 years.

  3. You can contact the city and they will plant trees for you. They are particular about the kind of tree because of the roots causing damage to sewer and sidewalks.
