I’m looking for an apartment in a brownstone (2 bedrooms or 1 bedroom with a den) in North Park Slope or Cobble Hill for July 1. The thing is, I don’t want to use a broker. Is Craigslist really the best way to go about doing this, or is there some other reliable resource people are using to post apartments?

Any tips are much appreciated!

  1. I have something in Sunset Park 2 blocks from the R and N train, it’s not park slope but it’s a great apartment for the price 3 bedrooms for $1,300 a month in a three family home.

    Please contact me at LNAU324@aol.com

  2. I am the landlord (3:38). The tenant is leaving at the end of July. After they leave I would like to do some work at the apartment. They have been living there for about 4 years now. The bathroom will get gut renovated and new electrical work will be done. Therefor, the apartment might not be available till end of Aug. If still interested: (pharmd718@yahoo.com).

  3. i’d be interested to find out more specifics about the rental also, if you end up not being interested, 4:03…

i live in the north slope (own) and have two friends who would like to move to the area and rent…

let me know if i should give you my email…

  4. Thanks everyone for all of the tips!

guest (3:38), feel free to email me the details of your place! I have great credentials, credit, etc. (woosternh@gmail.com)

  5. I am a landlord of a prime slope (north) brownstone. I always advertise on craigslist. Its free and very easy. The only problem that you would run into is that there are many brokers who pose as landlords and many apartments labeled prime slope when they are actually outside north slope and alot smaller then advertised. Additionaly, when I advertise an apartment its usually rented withing 1 day. Therefor, you will have to check it a few times daily to get a leg up on the updates.
p.s. ill have an apartment (1 bedroom) in July.

  6. Be prepared to spend some dough, though. I just saw a STUDIO listed for rent on Berkeley Place (North slope between 7th and 8th) for $1750!

That’s not far from Manhattan prices!

  7. I found my apt. “by owner” in North Slope on Craigslist last fall. There was also another by owner apt. I saw in Prospect Heights that I found on Craigslist.

In both cases the owner showed me the place himself and I got to spend some time talking to them about the apt. and neighborhood. Much more comfortable situation than dealing with a broker, if you ask me.

A lot of the “by owner” ads are realtors pretending to be owners, but many of them are legitimate. Just use an “I’ll believe when I see it” approach to the ads.

When you go see a place and talk to the person, it is easy to tell if they are the owner or a broker and if the place is reasonably priced or not.

  8. i saw a for rent sign in the window of a brownstone on bergen between 4th and 5th the other day…

not prime, per se, but not terrible either. close to trains and 5th ave at least.

obviously have no clue about the size of it.

  9. When I list my rental, CL’s the first, and usually the only, place I do it. It’s easy, free, and everyone knows to look there. I can’t imagine why anyone seriously seeking a rental like the one in my house would fail to look on CL. I imagine other FRBO landlords see it similarly. So, even if there are other places to look for listings, I can’t imagine that anything like what you are looking for would be listed elsewehre but not on CL. You’d be seeing duplicates of listings on CL.

I’m sure you know this, but you’ll make broker-free searching on CL a lot easier if you click the no fee or no fee–by owner filters.
