I’m looking at the 5″ x 3/4 finished pine floors. Seems like a relatively good price for pre-finished floors. Planning on doing the installation myself. Has anyone use Bellawood products before? How about dealing with Lumber Liquidators?
I’ll take any flooring recommendations as well. I’d love to use a smaller company and definitely will not order from Home Depot or Lowes, because of other problems I’ve had ordering anything through them.

  1. I’m the iFloors person again. Because my existing floor had a number of dips and sags, I wanted the thickest floor I could find, so I went with 3/4″ thick Kahrs. I also went with click-together floating because I’d never laid a floor before. I used shingles to shim up the floor where the sags were. You should have no problem with a solid ply subfloor. On the lower level of my house, the floor I used was only 3/16″ thick; it went over 1/4″ plywood and was professionally installed (glue-down).

Another source to check is FastFloors (internet only). They have a click-together floor that was quite inexpensive as I recall. It just didn’t come in the colors I wanted.

Can’t help at all with the glue. With floating floors there’s an underlayment that works pretty well for giving the floor a solid sound. I’ve never heard of glue having sound-proofing qualities, but I’m not really up-to-date on green and/or soundproofing products.

  2. I’m not complaining about the recommendation. I appreciate it. I just wanted to know if I was missing something.
I’ll have to ask LL about the plank lengths. It does make a difference and I will probably stop by iFloors at least to check them out. The more recommendations the better.
As for leveling, do you think I’ll have any problems installing over a plywood subfloor? As far as I can tell it’s very level. I don’t know what kind of tolerances wood flooring can take.
As an aside, I was considering just nail down, but maybe glue and nail. I was looking at some “green glue” which is supposed to help with sound proofing, but it’s pretty expensive and don’t know if it’s worth it and if it will work with plank flooring.

  3. I’m the person who recommended iFloors. Sorry they didn’t have what you wanted at the price you wanted, but hey, you wanted suggestions and I gave you one. I also advised making sure the floor was level because it was a problem for me, and, since you didn’t say you’d be installing over a plywood subfloor, I added that in an attempt to be helpful.

Personally, the reason I don’t like LL floors is because the plank sections are short and it tends to make the wood look more like tile, imho.

I hope you enjoy your new floor.

  4. Just checked iFloor, their prices compared to Lumber Liquidators is horrible. For wide pine flooring, there’s nothing even close to Lumber Liquidators prices, especially for the wide plank. LL has 5″ finished pine, 3/4″ for $3 and change a square foot. Am I missing something?

  5. You might also try iFloors, which I believe has a store in Brooklyn as well as an online outlet. I just put in a floating floor that I bought from them. BTW, ease of installation–at least with the floor I did–is all about the existing floor being level.

  6. I used some prefinished floooring from Lumber Liquidators a few years ago. The price was great and the installation easy, just don’t forget to level your subfloor and put down nailing felt.

A word of caution about the prefinished floors, they don’t appear to be easy to refinish, and the toenails of our pit/lab left little marks all over it. The marks weren’t that noticeable, though.
