We’re planning on building a parlor floor deck and need to replace the kitchen window with a door. Can anyone recommend sources for a simple storm door that is mostly all glass? Also, I’m curious to hear what others have done in this circumstance. Since the new door will be vulnerable to burglars, do you have a metal gate built? Has anyone used shatterproof laminate instead (to avoid the jail-bars look)? What about a screen door? Any suggestions would be very appreciated.
If you get a security door, make sure it’s double keyed or else someone can just break the glass, unlatch and open. Some of the security doors at Lowes only have key access on the outside, which i don’t understand. Maybe it’s just for the illusion of security?
we ordered a great door like you describe from dykes. we also have a metal gated door
I’m always more worried about butt burglars.
French doors look beautiful in such a location. Lots of light. But broken up by panes – one large expanse of glass without panes always seems too modern in these buildings for me. Also, less chance of someone breaking it with the panes (I’m talking accidentally here, not break-ins).
As to security, whether you are comfortable with alarms, or are the sort that wants the physical barrier of an iron gate, is largely a matter of personal preference. You can do good locks and an alarm; or you can add an iron gate that opens outward – your choice.
We have French doors on the inside that are double-keyed for security, with insulated storm doors on the outside. We’ve had no problems in 10 years.
We got the storm doors at Park Slope Glass when it was owned by someone else–current owners don’t seem as good.
We have an all Glass Anderson door with glass transom above leading out to a deck with stairs to the back garden.
We have an alarm system to deal with the security issue.
Where do you guys live that you need to worry about security? None of the people I know in central Park Slope who have deck access have grates or grills. We never ever thought of that either.
We used Elegant Doors, they did an ok job. Not as much glass as I would’ve liked, but the larger the glass area, the more expensive. it’s double glass, so we did not see need for storm door (after all, it’s better than the leaky window next to it.)
Someone once mentioned bodega doors with a steel frame, I think that would look great with maximum glass, but is probably energy wasting.
we have a parlor floor door to a deck. I’d imagine you’d want a real door and a storm/screen door on the outside. Talk to a contractor and look at the premade doors at Lowe’s or Home Depot to get an idea of how much they cost. My one bit of advice is, if you are getting a door with a window AND a screen/storm door outside, make sure that the door window isn’t bigger than the screen on the screen door, or else you’ll be looking though the window at the screen door. Hope that helps…..
