The "F" Train....
Anyone notice the F train is becoming increasingly more and more crowded? I usually take the F between 7:15am – 7:35am and get on at 7th Avenue. As recent as 2 months ago,I was almost always able to get a seat at Jay Street, if not before that at 4th avenue… now I can’t get…
Anyone notice the F train is becoming increasingly more and more crowded? I usually take the F between 7:15am – 7:35am and get on at 7th Avenue. As recent as 2 months ago,I was almost always able to get a seat at Jay Street, if not before that at 4th avenue… now I can’t get a seat until sometimes BWY/Lafayette. And the rushour home is ridiculous at this point, luckily I get on at 57th where it’s pretty empty IF the train is running on time, of course!
Now before some idiot posts something stupid – I am only asking because it’s been my observation and am wondering if there has been a genuine influx of people in our nabes and if you all have noticed it as well….
Just wait until Bloomberg’s congestion plan is in operation and everyone will leave their cars at home to avoid the $8.00 fee for driving into Manhattan. I wouldn’t look for additional trains to absorb the additional riders either.
Fewer trains means more crowding, and that’s what it is. I think without announcing it, the MTA has reduced the number of trains they are using in order to lower their operating costs and earn more money. I have definitely noticed the B & Q trains are more scarce over the last several months. Much longer wait for the B/Q now than when we moved to PLG a little over a year ago. The 2/3 is insane. That train is just a myth, it seems when you are waiting. It never comes.
Loving the idea of an express, but see it happening about the same time my social security check is delivered by the lovely postal worker on my route. Which would be, 40 years from now or never.
I get on between 8 and 8:15 at 7th avenue, and it is crawling more and more slowly every day. And it’s always the G train’s fault, according to the friendly MTA worker driving my train.
The nice people over at the Kensington blog has summarized the changes coming for the F.

Im not really looking forward to the express but it should be a big deal to the 7th avenue riders.
yes , i have noticed the same – i get on around 7:30am at 15th St. this used to be early enough that there were an abundance of free seats all the way until carroll. it does seem that things started changing about 2 months ago. i now wait much longer between trains. i know, all subway service is crappy – i’ve lived here for 15 years and commuted on just about every train line – but the F is weird because the drop-off in service seems rather precipitious and is occurring early enough during the morning rush that you can’t just chalk it up to the usual morning crap/
I think it’s because people are moving like crazy to Park Slope and the like.
7th and 5th Avenues are more lively than ever before. The resurgence of these neighborhoods is nothing short of spectacular and NYC transit is light years behind the gentrification.
There is a decline in service on EVERY train. I use the 1,2, 3 (and used to use the 9) on the UWS and it’s significantly worse than it was 5 years ago. The trains are ALWAYS crowded and they do not run at regular intervals. No matter what time I take the train, even in off-peak hours, the platform is loaded with people who have been waiting way too long for a train. It’s pathetic. The MTA is a big sham. I really wish the Straphangers Campaign would order an audit of the MTA’s books to reveal what the heck is really going on. It is a total sham. The MTA’s directors should be put in jail.
Ive noticed it get slowly more crowded for the past decade or so but I generally got a seat at 15th St. Now I only get a seat when I leave early.
I don’t notice the delays most people talk about on here though. It seems to be just as annoying as any other train but no more frequent.
i too have noticed a general downslide in service – especially in the new year. i have heard rumors that they are going to close the smith/9th and 4th ave stops in the near future to do (much needed) repair and i fear it will get even worse. as it is it takes me an hour to get from 7th ave to 63rd and rarely a day goes by without some idle waiting either in the tunnel or in a station. they hike the prices but the service goes down… yup, sounds like the MTA to me!
