We are doing a gut renovation and would like to use the opportunity to install an integrated stereo/TV system, including putting the wiring in the walls, ceiling speakers, and linking components, in several parts of the house. Does anyone have a recommendation for a reputable outfit that does these types of installations? Not looking to go too high-end, just decent, basic stuff that will be unobtrusive. Thanks.
whoever is installing your phone/cable lines as well as your doorbell can also install your in ceiling speakers. we renovated our home and had 4 – 8 in. Polk speakers installed in the ceiling (2 front 2 rear) with the jacks (to hook up to your reciever) for the speakers put in at both ends of the family room in-case we were not sure which way to position the TV. We hooked the TV, DVD and speakers to a Yamaha AV home theater receiver and we are really enjoying having home theater surround sound from the speakers in the ceiling. Not very complicated and very enjoyable.
I don’t think you need a specialized installer per se. Just figure out what type of system you plan to use, where you want everything etc., and then have your contractor’s electrician install it with the rest of the wiring. If I were you, I’d look into what they call “Home Servers” which are centralized computers that hold your music/video etc. and can be accessed from different points in the house. Wiring that thing up should be pretty simple…..You could ask at an electronics store if they offer installation also.
Thanks for your comments. I’m looking for recommendations of companies that do the cable lay out and installation, etc. Any suggestions?
10.08 is right. Research what you want and where you want to put it. Buy cables put them in before the plaster goes on. Then you can spend all your money on the system and pay almost nothing for installation.
That is a great idea. I would really suggest pulling all your cables now whether you intend to use them or not. What I mean is, if you have a 5.1 surround system, keep in mind that the latest and greatest is 7.1 – pull the cable for the other 2 speakers and leave it in the wall for future upgrades. Likewise if you don’t have a flat panel TV now, it won’t hurt to pull HDMI , audio, and power cables to a wall location for a future upgrade.
