I was in Prospect Park this weekend choking on fumes and smoke spewing out of the chimney of the John Jay School of Justice on 7th Ave in Park Slope. I was running and had to stop because the smell was so noxious. At first I thought it was a fire and started walking toward the smoke. But as I got closer I saw that it was coming out of the smoke stack from the school. I asked someone on the street about it and they said it happens all the time. Anyone know what all the smoke is about?
You should definitely call 311. It’s a violation to spew black smoke from your chimney. There is probably a problem with the boiler. Make sure you tell them the exact time of the day that it happens, because the DEP inspectors have to observe the black smoke coming out of the chimney to issue a violation.
They probably have a defective burner on their furnace. From my office window in midtown west I often see plumes of black smoke coming out of the chimneys of older buildings. Someone told that’s the likely problem.
Please call 311 and report it. Others in the area have voiced concern, and frankly, the more often they hear it, the better chance of someone checking it out.
How do you think they maintain excellent educational requirements?
A few C’s on the exams and its into the furnace with Ye.
