I need about 10 well-constructed kitchen cabinets and am close to giving up on the standard channels. “Semi-custom” run-of-the-mill compromise is over 1K a cabinet and better quality cabinets seem to be 2-3K each. This just floors me when I think I get get pretty good appliances at this price. Not that I need 10 36-wide counter-depth fridges.

Any recommendations for cabinet builders that will build quality (dovetail 3/4″ drawers, 3/4 solid shelves, 3/4 frameless plywood construction, 3/4 solid wood doors painted maple, full overlay, Blumotion slides)? Would travel to PA Amish country if I knew who to contact for the right craftsman and cut out the middleman. Plan to instll myself, but would consider a turn-key installation with a local cabinet maker.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

  1. Have you looked at the unassembled cabinets imported from China? I’ve been in the cabinet business for years and have seen these RTAs literally change the cabinet industry. Plywood boxs with solid wood doors and frames. Better than US quality at about half the price. I won’t spam the forum with my website but i’m sure there are many dealers in NYC with these cabinets…

  2. Not sure if you are still looking for cabinets, but I am an aspiring woodworker (live in Brooklyn) and just made custom mahogany/face frame/fully inset cabinets with birch plywood core running blum slides.

Happy to answer any more questions you may have, let me know and I will post back.

  3. OP again. I’m starting to feel too picky and a bit guilty about all the distributors I’ve tortured. Ok, quick list of some of the cabinet lines I’ve actually touched:
    Ikea
    Thomasville
    Schuler/Medallion Gold
    Plain and Fancy
    Rutt
    Wellborn
    Signature
    Kraftmaid
    Quaker Maid
    Craftmaid
    Luxor
some high-end Italian line to die for (save the caginets, forget everything else if there’s a fire)
    and about 5 others

See, Medallian Gold doesn’t offer frameless, Quaker Maid doesn’t offer sliding drawers where the drawer sides are as high as the face (so your tupperware lids don’t spill out), the higher end ones just get pricey because they bake on the finish a gajillion times and build every thing from scratch including the doors. And by the way, solid wood boxes does not equal wood planks, but plywood, except in the very very high end cabinets. Plywood boxes are absolutely fine and are superior to planks due to stability, esp. when the sides and bottom plywood is 3/4″ not 5/8″ or 1/2″ thick..

What I need to avoid is melamine/partical board construction (sorry Ikea).

I’ll stop my complaining and make a decision soon and let those interested know where my agonalyis leads me. Thanks to all.

  4. We went to Park Slope Kitchen Gallery like Mrs. Limestoner did (their info is on Forum archives) and chose Medallion. Medallion is a solid-wood box and door or front, and the only part that’s plywood are the shelves but they’re thick and nice and strong. But ask them the specifics, there. Ask what they can do for you for your price range, because Park Slope Kitchen Gallery is priced the best. It seems the choice for contractors and developers, FYI. Our kitchen contractor bought his own cabinets from them, and a couple times I was in there I’d see developers coming in and overhear them talking to PSKG about the cabinets they were getting for the condos they were building. (I’m snoopy!)

Lastly, do look at the cabinets in person. Internet research alone will make you feel like the semi-custom cabinets aren’t good enough, when actually many of the lines are very nice. I went through that too, where I declared nothing but fully custom solid wood would be acceptable, but when I got the price (gasp) I came down to reality. And I’m thrilled with our semi-custom Medallion cabinets. They look gorgeous.
