We have very light maple flooring. Does anybody know a good company to stain them dark ebony? I’m aware that staining maple is very difficult…Greatly appreciated.

  1. I have maple inlays w/ my red oak parquet floors and recently stained it golden oak and it looks good. Maybe not the same as having full maple floors. In any event, I used Desmond Harmon Floors (917) 642 2752. They were great to work with in every way. Tell him Rachel provided the reference. Good luck.

  2. The graining of maple is very different. You need to not only stain it, but you should probably add dye to the stain mixture. Sorry I do not know anyone here that could do it for you. But I would pick someone who will do many samples for you or it will turn out like $h!t.

  3. Thanks so much guys, I really appreciated… But does anybody know a reputable company to do the sanding, staining and finishing for us? Has anybody stained a maple floor?

  4. Some maple stains fine – it just doesn’t stain as dark as another, softer wood would using the same stain. Because the stain doesn’t penetrate as much, the stain will show what grain there is in maple for a nice effect.

  5. Maple has to be the most boring of all the common hardwoods (no grain figure.) I don;t like maple at all, and I can definitely understand the desire to stain it. One problem to consider is that most likely the floor is already finished with some kind of sealer, stain, wax, or whatever. It will have to be removed first before staining else the stain won’t penetrate.

I’d do a test on a small section. Minwax makes a bunch of penetrating stains, available in your local HW store.
