Hi – Wondering if anyone could give a ballpark estimate for the cost of installing 4-6 recessed spots where currently there is track lighting. I’m assuming it’s an electrician-required (not just handyman) job, since the track has only one junction box (right term?), so they’ll need to put in one for each spot? Plus cost of patching/finishing the ceiling after…
Best guesses? Thanks!

  1. Hello,

I had 14 4″ lights installed by a couple of guys that work as electricians for the city who do work on the side. They only charged me $60/ fixture. They do good work. They did a very neat job, but the only thing is they don’t patch the ceilings. I’m sure you can find a handy man to patch for you. Give them a call- Benjamin & Thomas 917-578-0905 or 917-279-7899 Cell phones. Tell them I sent you. Good luck!

  2. Hi – I am doing exactly that. Replacing track lighting with four recessed lights in my kitchen. It’s going to cost me $1000-$1400. Probably overpaying, but it will be nice.

  3. In my experience (and I’m not an electrician), you only need the one junction box. Most recessed light fixtures have built-in junction boxes for each unit. You will probably need the fixtures made for existing ceilings as opposed to new construction.

I agree w/ Mrs. Limestone, and think a good handyman should be able to handle the job, including all patch/paint work.

  4. I don’t know if you need an elec. or not. I know some good handyman can certainly do electrical work. I guess it depends on your guy and how confortable you feel with him doing the work.

The price could vary a lot depending upon how difficult it would be to add the lights, how many lights you need, what kind of fixtures you’ll use and the type of ceiling you have. I’d say using one guy to do the electrical and patching work would likely be cheaper than bringing in two different people.

Don’t forget to add on the cost/time of repainting your ceiling.
