Our brownstone needs to replace our cornice. We don’t know where to begin, but I’ve been assigned to do some research. Anyone know who does this kind of thing? What it costs and what material would be best (I’m reading fiberglass?).

I appreciate any tips. I assume this is going to be a budget-busting project but it is what it is.

  1. i just installed a new cornice on my building in boreum hill. im more than happy to share my experience with you regarding costs, materials, method, etc. email me if youd like at chinaspice25 (at) yahoo dot com

  2. If you are in a Landmarks District, you need to have this approved before you just “go buy it”. You probably want an architect. Busting the budget is relative. Whatever you do, don’t replace it with a 70s era metal panel covering…that’s just tacky.

  3. There’s also a place in Long Island City. New York magazine did a piece on replacing cornices some years back. They even look at old pics of your house and replicate the old cornice.

  4. look at a copy of ‘old house’ magazine- in the back, they have architectural salvage resources. They usually have old copper or tin cornices for sale- and you can buy the length you need.
