Hoping someone can help me out. I am looking at renting a new apt around Ocean Ave and Canton, on the southeast corner of Prospect Park by the lake. I am not familiar with the neighborhood and hope someone can share come light. Anyone live around here that can tell me about crime, would it be safe for a 20-something single female to live by herself? Does $1200 for a 1 bed (approx 650 sq ft) apt sound right? Thanks for your input.
Move to queens. its safer and in your price range.
That is not a good area to move to. It is very noisy, especially in the warmer weather. There is tons of traffic around there, and not that much shopping with the exception of the junk stores on Church Avenue. I would not walk around that area by myself at night. It’s not the safest. At the risk of getting bashed by others on this board, I am a native Brooklyn resident, and would not move to that area. You could get a nice one bedroom for $1,200, a little further down in Midwood, closer to Brooklyn College.
My friend is paying $1600 for a 1BR in Windsor Terrace, which was much more affordable for her than Park Slope, so I believe it that they can get $1200 for a full 1BR in this location. Fewer people buying = more demand for rental apartments = rents go higher. Plus there’s so little in this range for 20-somethings. It’s so hard when you don’t want a roomate and want your own space like a grownup!
Try walking into the 70th precinct and ask for an officer to talk with you about that particular block and area and crime. They will do that for you. Also do the evening walk you’d take from the subway home, see what you observe and how you feel. And ask to see the apartment on a weekend, that’s really important. Because then you get a feel for the noise.
Walk around at night, sit on the steps of your prospective building for a while, check out the scene and see how comfortable you feel.
That price seems crazy high, but lucky for me I’ve been out of the rental market for quite a while now.
Caton gets A LOT of truck traffic since it turns into Linden Blvd a few blocks to the east, and is a major truck route through central Brooklyn. Unless you really like noise, I hope you have a rear-facing unit.
You might find more 20 somethings a few blocks further north, in the PLG part of Ocean Ave,
It’s Caton, not Canton. This area is in the 70th precinct’s “impact zone” which means that it is saturated with rookie cops during all hours in an attempt to reduce crime. I suggest that you drive around the area at night and see if you feel comfortable.
The rent seems high, but that’s what they’re getting these days.
