Has anyone used any of the heating vendors in the ads on this site and can make a recommendation? Also, we haven’t been getting adequate heat on our top floor(4-story brownstone) and wonder what the issue might be. We’ve let air of the pipes a few times but still hear lots of clanging and banging on the two top floors. We’ve got HVAC controls on each floor that supposedly regulate radiator heat but it’s just not working on the top floor. Also, I wonder what the recommended boiler size should be for a single family, 4-story approx. 5000 sq. feet. Any advice would be appreciated.

  1. Also, fourth floor of a coop I lived in got better heat when they replaced/insulated the skylight that was at the top of the airshaft. Often they are vented high-hat windows – with louvers on the outside – where they used to be over airshafts (which may have been closed off, with the airshaft cover still with louvers letting in cold air, and hot air out). Also, if there is an original skylight over your staircase, it is probably not insulated, very drafty, and losing a lot of heat.

  2. Every top floor of a brownstone I ever lived on did not get adequate heat. The 4th floor was always way colder than the 3rd (had a duplex once of those two floors; other times, was in neighbor’s places, talked to them about heat), and the rear of the 4th floor was always way colder than the front (swear was almost cold enough to see my breath in the back bedroom sometimes.) Had a friend with a similar problem – totally improved when landlord installed a new boiler in the building. Good luck.

  3. We used All H.V.A.C. to rebuild our gas forced air furnace two years ago. They were on the top end in their price bid, but were meticulous and came highly recommended. I use them for maint. (service contract) and they continue to be great. My neighbor across the street has hot water and just used Vigilante to do the job. Too early to tell if she will have any problems.
